Allied Telesyn Opens its Newest R&D Facility and Announces Plans to Double its Size in 2001

New research and development campus opening today in Christchurch, NZ with first building to house 100 Allied Telesyn engineers and support staff now, second building to double capacity

Bothell, WA, October 25, 2000 - Allied Telesyn International (www.alliedtelesyn.com), a worldwide leader in simplifying IP networking for businesses of all sizes, today announced the opening of its newest research and development center in Christchurch, New Zealand. The first of two facilities planned on the new Christchurch campus, officially opened today by deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand, Hon. Jim Anderton and Allied Telesyn Research Ltd. General Manager, Geoff Peck, will house 100 engineers and support staff. Construction is set to begin soon on a second larger building that will open on the Allied Telesyn Christchurch R&D campus in Q3 2001.

"This expansion is quite simply a direct response to the success we've experienced with our New Zealand Research center," said Melvyn Wray, Allied Telesyn's Vice-President of Corporate Marketing. "The quality of product and support coming out of ATR has been consistently outstanding over the near decade and a half they have been designing and developing networking products - expansion is the natural 'next step,' and is likely to continue even beyond the current campus plan.

" Allied Telesyn Research Ltd., the R&D arm of Allied Telesyn, is responsible for the development of IP-based network technologies and has developed several of the company's newest products this year, including the AT-AR family of fixed configuration and modular access routers, and the Rapier™ family of Layer 3 switches. Both families are powered by AlliedWare™, software that has nearly 20 years of development and operational time behind it. This proven expertise in IP-based systems development also allows ATR to provide its customers with superior support and an ability add new features and modify code to meet new market - or even individual customer - requirements.

"ATR is both Allied Telesyn's biggest kept secret and its strongest card in the game of IP-based network systems provision," said Geoff Peck, Managing Director of Allied Telesyn Research, Ltd. "It will undoubtedly come as surprise to many observers that ATR is based in New Zealand, but the research and development environment here attracts some of the best brains in the business. Not only do we have a highly-trained and highly-stable group of professionals that make up our R&D teams, but they are enthusiastic communicators too- a key to the kind of success that leads to expansion of a division like ours. Our engineers' ability to communicate well with their partners and counterparts here, in the U.S. and abroad helps create successful products; their ability to communicate with and integrate new engineers - whether recent graduates and experienced designers - makes the resultant expansion smooth, and keeps quality very high.

" The new facility is 80% occupied at opening, and is expected to be fully-occupied within three months as the company adds engineers - both experienced and newly-graduated. Construction on the second building, which adds another 150 engineers to Allied Telesyn Research Ltd's growth potential, is planned for completion by Q3 2001.
